The Sound of the Bavarian Postillon, by Friedrich Ortlieb, 1890

Museum für Kommunikation, Frankfurt am Main.

The postillon sits in the stable next to his horse after the day’s work. He is excercising the melodies for the postillon’s horn and has the music book in front of him. He probably is preparing himself for the annual contest for postillion horn blowers, an important event in that time. The horse turns its head towards the music book leaning against a beer mug, but in fact it will be the smell of the beer that attracts its attention.
