Horsemen I, II, III in Red, Black and White by Javier Marin

exhibited on the Lange Voorhout in The Hague, September 2009.

This Mexican artist does not give an explanation of this monumental work and leaves it to the spectator to draw conclusions. He is intrigued by Spanish baroque in Mexico and in the lost culture of the Mayas and Azteks before the Spanish arrived. The three rider of each group are similar, but in the black group the middle and the right riders are reversed compared the red and the white group. All riders carry a lance and sit on their horse in bizarre and tense postures. They give the impression of exhaustion and suffering after a battle. The horses, however, show great strength and stability and seem to bring their riders safely back home. The three different color groups could represent different native origins, who all have the same sufferings after their fighting.
