Horsemen I, II, III in Red, Black and White

as exhibited on the Lange Voorhout in The Hague, September 2009

by Javier Marin

The artist does not give an explanation about his work but expects the specatator to draw his or her own conclusions. In any case he is intrigued by Spanish baroque in Mexico and in the lost culture of the Mayas and Azteks in Mexico before the Spanish arrived. The three riders of each group are similar, but in the black group the middle and the right riders are reversed compared with the red and white group. The three riders carry a lance and sit on their horse in bizarre and tense bearings. They give the impression of exhaustion and suffering after having fought. The horses, however, give the impression of great strength and stability and seem to carry their riders safely back home. The three different colors could represent different native origins.
